How To Improve Your Alexa Rating
Investigation:
Okay, so I decided to write this article for newgptmarketing.com, since we're mostly focused on how to increase your website traffic and get a higher page rank on google I thought it would fit right in. We also thought by writing an article on seo it would help promote this website even more, as well as all the activities and links this website provides like search engine optimization, website traffic analysis, I thought it would be a great fit etc.
Alexa.com is a service from Amazon that aims to collect information about websites, and one of the things they do is rank websites based on the amount of visitors a website gets. A better explanation, they maintain a Global Top 500 Websites list as well as tracking the numerical ranking of individual websites.
The Downfall
The messed up part about it is, the way they get their ranking structure is composed isn't rocket science or complex. Alexa provides a toolbar plugin for browsers...once it is installed, it tracks all the sites you have gone to and visited and reports all that data back to their servers.
The problem with this is that the individuals most likely to download the Alexa toolbar aren't typical "average internet users". the reason being is because Alexa concentrates on topics like website rankings, web site data, seo/sem, statics etc, the individuals that end up acquiring the toolbar tend to be webmasters and technical individuals very involved in the technical side of websites developement seo search engine marketing ect...
These individuals tend to visit sites that are more in the realm of seo and sem and website developement, this creates a very gleemed view of website actual status and rankings, Because. Websites that bring in highly technical individuals go to the top to of the Alexa ranking structure, on the other hand sites that have a different niche fall in their ranking structure. Clearly for high traffic websites that get visited by everyone being the "average internet user", this effect isn't notice.
Some examples of this effect are simple to discover. For instance This website internetmarketing.com does a fantastic job of showing why their web site is "overrated" by Alexa, because their main focus is centered around Internet Marketing and internet marketing niches. on the other hand Bigoakinc.com is currently ranked at 69,475 in Alexa while a really high traffic site, fulltiltpoker.net is ranked at 101,852. Quantcast.com, who use a different method of measurement, have fulltiltpoker.net ranked at 15,980, with 77k+ monthly visitors. Bigoakinc.com calculates that it gets roughly 6-7k visitors a month, or perhaps one tenth of the traffic of the poker website.
This website, newgptmarketing.com, is average in popularity, with around 8000+ page views per month. Additionally, the demographics of our visitors are the kind of people that would acquire the alexa toolbar. Therefore, our current Alexa ranking is relatively average at 496749 as of 10/20/2010.
So why make a big fuzz over Alexa and their ranking matrix structure?
There are many examples why Alexa ranking is important. One example, is that their are ad placement agencies and affiliate companies that will not accept your site unless it's got some minimum Alexa ranking. Additionally, there are other directories and services like reviewme.com, or payperpost.com that use Alexa rankings to make decisions. Also if you are trying to sell your website or domain, purchasers use Alexa as part of their decision when purchasing a site and use alexa as well as Google Page Rank to decide the value of your website.
So Let's get down to on how you can increase your Alexa Ranking...
To Start off We did alot of reasearch on this, and didn't really find any suggestions that seemed feasible. Some of the ideas out there:
Installing one of Alexa's site widgets
We tried this, but it had no effect on the rating. Additionally, the widget was sometimes slow in rendering, and hence made our website slower.
Others tried experiments with the widget, and got no conclusive results.
Also, Alexa says the widget has no effect on rankings
Scripts and services that try to game the system either via redirects, automating a web browser with the alexa toolbar to visit your site or services that cheat the system
As for the "Alexa Redirects", there wasn't any evidence that it worked, and Alexa appears to have shut it down anyway.
There is some evidence that automating hits to your website will work and can get you into the 50,000 range or so. However, we do have our ethics, and aren't going to be trying any blackhat or dubious approaches.
So obviously the best idea was to write an article explaining how to increase your alexa ranking:
Writing an article that explained how to increased your alexa ranking would bring in more technical individuals visiting our website so this is it the article to bring in you guys the technical SEO people.
An Article explaining how to increase Alexa ranking and the why and how's of the alexa ranking structure, was a good idea, to attract more technical type people thus increasing our very own alexa rankings. And, if those visitors were from the web marketing and SEO community, they might have the Alexa toolbar installed. Because the Alexa ranking structires is based only on traffic with the toolbar installed, our ranking should go right up.
Our Experiment
We update this website every week for statistics informational purposes and as of this week our rankings have increased or more correctly said, "decreased" from 496749 as of 10/29/10 to 325629 as of this week, we will keep this article updated on this website for your informational purposes.
